Sea life and Sledding in Seward, AK

After my visit in Valdez, I headed to Seward, AK to meet up with some more RV sisters! We boondocked right on Resurrection Bay with a beautiful view despite the rain and clouds while there.

My site overlooking the bay.

The sisters had been on an all day long sea excursion and were tired, so we all ate together then called it a night. The next morning, it was still raining! But went to the Sea life center there and I saw some puffins I was  itching to see!

Puffin. What unique and gorgeous birds! All in a natural habitat.

Tufted puffin.

It was time to head out onto the coast of the peninsula, so I said my cya laters and headed out of town. But right outside of Seward lives the Seavey's of Iditarod fame, so I had to stop to tour the kennels.

The Seaveys are a four generation family of mushers and Iditarod champions. The youngest is Dallas who was the latest winner. You can tour their kennels and take a dog sled ride.

They begin the presentation with the history of the Iditarod. The dogs are trucked to Wasilla, where the race begins and ends in Nome, AK about a 1000 miles later through major inclimate winter weather.

Then, we got to meet the sled dogs. All 85 of them!

The staff hooked up teams of dogs to a sled on wheels for the ride. All the dogs were howling wanting to go! It was quite impressive!

And off they went!

Next up, we got to meet the new additions of the sled dogs. These dogs are socialized and trained very young and bred specifically for this purpose.

There were two litters. The older of the two.

And one from the youngest. All so cute! :)

And then, there was Buddy. A retired, beautiful and well respected sled dog.

Finishing up the tour, they showed us the equipment that is used today in the Iditarod race.

Check out those boots! ;)

It was a very enjoyable and well worth it tour. I'd highly recommend it :)

Now, lets head for Soldotna to the salmon!
